Covington Opens 2023 with the USCS at Southern Raceway
Matt Covington - Glenpool, OK. (March, 1st 2023) Matt Covington and team kicked off the 2023 season with the USCS Tour at Southern Raceway in Milton, Florida. The results weren’t ideal, but it accomplished the purpose of shaking the car down in preparation of a loaded schedule.
“There were some positives from the weekend for sure,” stated Covington. “Both nights the car was solid and had tons of speed with no mechanical issues, so that gives me confidence in our package and winter preparations. I think speed-wise and equipment-wise, we are in one of the best positions we’ve been in. We were able to motor towards the front in the heat Friday night, giving us a chance at a solid feature finish. Unfortunately, a racing incident took us out during the main event. I was also fighting a cold since arriving last week, and it peaked Saturday with extreme flu-like symptoms. It’s hard to keep me out of the car, but that’s the worst I felt in a while. After transferring out of the heat from a deep start, we considered just starting and parking for the feature. My main goal was to try some things with the car and test them out before pulling off. We were a little tight, but the racer in me kept me going and we hung on for a 10th place finish. We definitely learned some good things for the notebook. I also have a new crew guy, Steven, who’s still learning, which is one reason hitting these early races was crucial. We hope to get him familiar and comfortable with the team and tasks before the real grind starts. Also, a big thanks to Vern and all the supporters we have this year making it possible for us to travel up and down the road, chasing the tour for another season. I’m excited to see what this year will bring.”
Up next for Matt and the team is Hattiesburg Speedway for another weekend with the USCS Tour. This will be the second leg of a three-weekend stretch to get everything tested and right for the upcoming ASCS National Tour opener at Devil’s Bowl later this month.
