3rd Place Run Highlights Covington's Weekend at LOS

CG Motorsports-Glenpool, OK (May 30, 2019) Matt Covington and the team had a rough and successful run this past weekend at Lake Ozark Speedway with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour. Saturday unfortunately ended with a DNF and Sunday night he rebounded with a 3rd place podium finish.

Saturday night’s draw set Covington up well in the heat race. He started 3rd and was able to pass for 2nd, earning enough points to make the redraw. The number 5 pill was to be Matt’s draw. He was able to make forward progress early in the race, sitting in 3rd for many laps while railing the top. However, Roger Crocket was able to squeeze by him on the bottom. Around mid-race, he had reclaimed the ground between him and the 11 by utilizing the middle in turns 3 and 4. He was about to make the pass coming out of turn 2 when a collision with Crocket caused Matt to hit the wall and spin to a stop. The nose wing suffered serious damage. The driver was able to continue from the tail, but the smashed nose wing proved to make steering the machine difficult. Unfortunately, Covington drove the car too hard in turns 1 and 2, hitting the wall and causing the car to flip. The A feature was over for the team, giving them 20th place.

After the race, Matt and team assessed the damage to his Triple-X Chassis mount. The top wing, motor plate, and front axle sustained significant damage and had to be replaced.

Despite the mishap, thanks to Mike Davenport, the 95 was ready to try again Sunday night, which was much kinder to the team.

Covington was set to start on the outside pole of his heat. He was able to get the jump on the start and kept a strong lead for the duration of the race.

The team secured a spot in the redraw once again, pulling out the number 2 spot for the A feature. Once more, Covington took the lead at the start of the race. After a caution in the first 10 laps, other drivers were able to regain the distance between the race leader. John Carney and Covington stole the show, battling for the race lead with back and forth slide jobs. However, after a second caution, Carney was able to slip by on the bottom. Covington didn’t catch up to him again until they hit lap traffic, where they resumed their intense struggle for the lead. Just as he was able to pass, another caution came out, setting the field back to the previous lap. Covington fought hard, railing the cushion, but was passed by Jonathan Cornell during their battle. He took the checkers in the 3rd spot.

“We had a chance of being on the podium both nights, so I’d say we had a good weekend,” Covington stated. “I still can’t believe what happened during Saturday night’s feature. I probably should have just pulled off after me and Crocket got together. But we’re points racing and I was wanting the best finish we could get. I just ended up overdriving the car and wrecked myself. But I’m glad we were able to rebound and have a successful run on Sunday. We’ve been fast and I look forward to going to some more familiar tracks as we head into speedweek. Thanks for all of our great sponsors and fans that support us.”
