Covington Comes Home 5th at Devils Bowl
CG Motorsports- GLENPOOL, Ok. (March 21th, 2018) Matt Covington opened up the ASCS Lucas Oil National Tour season with a with solid top-5 effort.
Covington’s 5th place run was to be the only one of the originally scheduled double-header weekend, as night two was rained out.
“We were pretty fast all night”, stated Covington. "The draw was good to us, putting us on the outside pole of heat 2. With the track still being narrow and fast, we were good but I wasn’t able to get the lead on the start, as the inside starting spot was still the place to be and we had to settle for 2nd. That put us starting 11th in the feature. We went forward from the start and I was eventually able to find the rubber and had got by Wayne Johnson and into 3rd when the last caution flew with three or four laps to go. The track had been taking rubber and the left rear was going bald, so on the restart I was trying to give myself and Sam Hafertepe enough room to stay in the rubber getting into one, but it ended up costing me. Wayne drove it in hard under me and I wasn’t able to grab all the rubber I needed and as a result lost the spot. We raced side by side working to gain it back, but with the lack of rubber I lost another spot at the checkers to Skyler Gee. It was frustrating knowing we was defiantly a podium car and missed getting that finish, but for sure going forward will be more aggressive on the restarts. All in all for the opening weekend of the National tour it was a good night, especially starting 11th and earning a top-5. I need to give a shout out to Mike Davenport. He came on board last month and has been a great asset to the team. We are still getting comfortable together, but he has done a great job and worked hard at the shop and track the last few weekends. We are going to take this weekend off and then go to Wichita and 81 Speedway the following weekend.”
