Covington's Podium and 4th Place Run Highlight Weekend

CG Motorsports: May 18, 2017 – Matt Covington and team took on three nights of racing this past weekend. Thursday night saw Covington go from last to first in his heat that propelled him to a podium and 3rd place finish with the Lucas Oil ASCS National at Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City. Covington then ran some regional action at Humboldt Speedway in Kansas on Friday that resulted in Matt pulling off in the A-main after a deep starting position. On Saturday, Covington took on the Knoxville Raceway in the 360 class where he led a portion of the feature and ultimately came home 4th with a failing power steering.

“Thursday night at Lakeside was a good night for us,” stated Matt. “We drew in the back of the heat, but was able to capitalize and win, which gave us the pole in the feature. Tyler had the car great all night long and we were able to battle with Sam and Aaron the whole race, challenging for the lead a couple different times. I had a few opportunities and runs, but they just didn’t work out and we had to settle for 3rd.”

On Friday, Covington joined the ASCS Red River region in Humboldt. “We just had one of those nights where the circumstances weren’t in our favor,” said Covington. “We started in the back of the heat and I was held up by the cars in front of me. I was only able to get one pass which put us 5th and then on the outside pole of the B main. We won the B but decided to just start and park in the A to save our tires since the track began to rubber down, and got a head start for the trip to Knoxville.”

Matt and the team’s goal at Knoxville Raceway Saturday night was to fine-tune the setup for the Nationals in August. Covington qualified 11th, ran 3rd in the heat, and lead part of the feature before coming home 4th.

“We had a good shot at winning again on Saturday. The car was on a rail on the bottom, probably the best it’s ever been there. Tyler did a great job. We were just clicking laps away, swapping the lead back and forth. With about seven or eight laps to go, I lost the power steering and couldn’t turn the car on the bottom or top very well. I started using the slick to turn the car and it cost us speed wise. We held on for a 4th place finish. If we can get the car that good next time we come, then I am confident we will be competitive.”

The team looks to run ASCS Red River regional events in Oklahoma this weekend at Lawton and Creek County Speedway near Sapulpa if the weather holds off.
