Covington Charges From 11th to 3rd at Smoky Mountain Speedway
CG Motorsports- Glenpool, OK (May 4th, 2017) – Matt Covington and team drove to Tennessee over the weekend to race with the USCS to score a 5th and 3rd place finish. Covington tackled the I-75 raceway on Friday and the Smoky Mountain Speedway on Saturday.
On Friday Covington came home 1st in the heat after starting 2nd. The point total from the heat started Matt 5th in the A-main. After moving up to 3rd early, Covington would be bounced back after hitting a rut in the lower groove and end up 5th in the feature.
“We had speed and a good car all weekend,” Matt said. “On Friday night, I just made a couple mistakes that cost me a win. We were good and started 5th. I jumped to the middle and top on an early restart and got to 3rd. Unfortunately, I went into conservative mode and went back down to the bottom and lost what I gained, the car was a lot better than the results."
On Saturday at Rocky Mountain Speedway, Covington came home 5th in the heat after starting 7th. The results netted him a 11th place starting position in the feature. Matt jumped to the top and battled to the front as the race went green to checkered. Hammering the outside groove on the fence Covington would charge up to 3rd before running out of laps at the checkers.
“The car and fuel system was not right on Saturday night.” stated Matt. “It cost us a few spots in the heat that got us starting so far back for the feature. The car was great and despite that we still drove up to 3rd. We were the best car on the track and just needed a yellow to get the win. It went green to checkered and by the time I got to the leaders it was the white flag lap. But it was still a great run for us and nothing to be disappointed in. Tyler had the car really balanced and excited for when we go back there with the National Tour in August. We are going to go to Texas this weekend and race with the ASCS Gulf South.”
