Covington Scores First Win Of 2014
Covington Motorsports- GLENPOOL, Ok. (July 23, 2014) Matt Covington picked up his first win on the season last Wednesday night at Gillett Thunder Speedway along with a 10th place finish at Black Hills Speedway on Friday and a subpar 17th place at Knoxville Raceway on Saturday.
Matt Covington and crew took advantage of a few nights off to stop into Gillett Thunder Speedway on Wednesday night in hopes of picking up the first win of the season and scoring some extra cash.
After getting a good pill draw and a heat race win, Matt would start the feature in the 3rd position.
With the drop of the green in the feature, Covington would go to work racing to the front. Matt found himself in the second spot stalking the leader at the halfway point. With the leader starting to fight steering trouble, Covington would take advantage to race into the lead and pick up his first win of the year.
With the win on Wednesday, Matt and the team would have a night off before heading to Black Hills Speedway with the ASCS National Tour on Friday.
After scoring a 2nd place heat race effort, Matt would find himself lining up mid pack for the feature. As the racing action unfolded, Covington would dice it up battling for a top-10 in the feature. With a flat right rear midway through the race, Covington would find himself having to work from the back after a pit side tire change. With the flat fixed, Covington was able to drive up into the 10th position at the drop of the checkers.
With the 10th place effort in the books from Friday night, Matt and the team would load up and drive straight though all night to the famed Knoxville Raceway on Saturday. The over night haul would be and attempt for Matt and crew to try and learn some stuff for the upcoming 360 Nationals.
After an average qualifying effort, Covington would line up on the front row for the heat. The heat race result would be a second place finish to secure an A-Main starting spot.
Come feature time Matt would find himself starting in the 18th position. With the deep starting spot, Covington would do what he could to go forward while also trying to learn a few things for the nationals. As the feature got underway it would become apparent the team had some work to do for the upcoming nationals, as the setup was not what Matt needed as the end result would be a 17th place effort.
“It was a good and rewarding week that saw our first victory of the season, capped off with some disappointment and head scratching at the end if that makes sense,” stated Covington. “It was awesome to be able to go down to Gillett and get the win on Wednesday night. It has been an up and down year and we needed it as a team. Friday night we had another solid night going for us and had an unfortunate flat the resulted in us coming from the back for a 10th place. I hate that it happened but not much we could do. But to be honest, Saturday was the night that’s got me puzzled and searching for speed at one of my favorite tracks. We were just average all night and a little bit off. We made a couple small changes and were able to slowly gain as the night went on. Hopefully we are headed in the right direction come next week. I believe we have a solid and promising nationals run in our future next week and weekend.”
