Covington Returns to the National Tour At Cocopah To Start Off The 2014 Season
Covington Motorsports- Taking on the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour at the Cocopah Speedway to start the 2014 season off, Matt Covington was able to show some speed on both nights of action, but inconsistency got the best of him.
On Friday night after a good pill draw, Covington lined his T&L Foundry/Wesmar powered/Triple X chassis on the outside of the front row in his heat. At the drop of the green, Matt found himself fighting a loose race car and slipped back to the third position. After pulling the wing back, Matt would run the leaders back down but ultimately have to settle for a 3rd place finish.
The heat race finish would put Matt In the B feature for the night where he was able to race to a second place finish and advance to the night’s A-main. As the feature got underway, Covington found himself working his way to the front with a solid race car. With only a handful of laps completed bad luck would strike as Matt found himself collected in an accident as one of the cars ahead of him started spinning leaving Matt nowhere to go. The damage from the accident would force Matt to the pits for the night.
After making the needed repairs to the car, Covington and the team would be ready to race again on Saturday night. At the draw table Matt would start the night with a high pill for his heat race. After a rain delay, Matt lined the Brodix/C.G. Martin Company/Factor 1 Racing No. 95 machine up in the fifth spot. Matt would fight hard to advance up to the third position as the checkered flag flew in the heat.
The third place finish would give Covington enough passing points to start the A-feature in the 15th starting spot. Matt would fight hard from the drop of the green flag on a wide open fast race track. He was able to gain a few positions and work his way towards the top-ten, but the engine started having over heating issues in the closing laps. With the loss of power, Matt started losing spots and fell to the 16th position as the race came to a close.
“We had a decent car both nights and showed some speed. I haven’t been out on the National tour much the last few years. The National competition is stout and from the drop of the green flag you have to run every lap 110%, as hard as you can go. With the regional stuff the last few years I am a little rusty in that regard,” he said. Covington also stated, “We had some heating problems that cost us a better finish on Saturday, but other than that it was a decent weekend, and it gives us some things to improve on as we get this season going.”
Matt and his Covington Racing team would like to thank T&L Foundry, Triple X Chassis, Winters, Brodix, C.G. Martin Company, Factor 1 Racing, All-Star Performance, Outlaw Wings, Pro Shocks, DMI Components, Keizer Wheels, ButlerBuilt, Simpson Race Products, GME Steering, Wesmar Racing Engines, Bob Hurley RV, Eaton Industrial, Maxwell Industries, and Schoenfeld Headers for their support in 2014.
2014 BY THE NUMBERS: Starts-2, Wins-0, Top 5’s-0, Top 10’s-0
