Covington Test’s and Tune’s at Knoxville
PETERSEN MEDIA- With the Knoxville 360 Nationals just over a month away, Matt Covington and his Covington racing team made the trip to Iowa, for twin feature night to get some laps at the famed speedway.
With group qualifying being utilized, Covington timed his T&L Foundry/Triple X/Winters Performance machine in 17th quickest.
Starting on the front row of his heat, Covington got the jump over Knoxville regular, Clint Garner, as the two broke away from the field.
Keeping Garner at bay, Covington picked up the win, and found himself in the eighth row of the first feature event.
Getting underway in the first feature event, Covington was smooth on the big half mile, as he slowly carved his way up inside the top-10.
Looking for more, Covington tried to the top-side of the ‘Mecca of Mud’, but it didn’t work out for him and he slipped back to the 11th spot, where he would finish.
Starting eighth in the second feature, the crew made wholesale changes to the Factor 1/All Star Performance/Outlaw Wings machine as they were there to learn.
The changes were to Covington’s liking, as he quickly advanced to the top-five.
While running in the fifth spot, a right front hub broke on Covington’s machine as he was exiting turn two.
Fortunately the Glenpool, OK driver was able to keep his machine off the fence, and get it shut down with no issues.
“We learned a ton at Knoxville, and I’m glad we made the trip,” he said. “The second feature we did some things that I really liked, so that is good for us, as we have struggled there in the past.”
Matt and his Covington Racing team would like to thank T&L Foundry, Triple X Chassis, Winters, Brodix, C.G. Martin Company, Factor 1 Racing, All-Star Performance, Outlaw Wings, Pro Shocks, DMI Components, Keizer Wheels, ButlerBuilt, Simpson Race Products, GME Steering, Wesmar Racing Engines, and Schoenfeld Headers for their support in 2013.
2013 BY THE NUMBERS: Starts-22, Wins-1, Top 5’s-7, Top 10’s-12
