Covington Fourth in Sooner Opener

PETERSEN MEDIA- With the ASCS Sooner region getting under way for 2013 over the weekend, Matt Covington kicked his title defense off by scoring a fourth place finish on Friday night before a 14th place effort on Saturday night.

Action kicked off at Creek County on Friday night. A good pill draw so Covington line his T&L Foundry/Triple X/Winters backed entry start third and win his heat putting him in the feature.

Starting fourth in the feature event, the bottom was worn out and much of the field was on the top in the moisture.

With not much passing going on through the night, it was a single file type track, and Covington held on to this fourth spot, as he focused on hitting his marks and not messing up to allow cars by him.

“At Creek County, we were pretty good all night,” Covington said. “Heat race we were good and picked up the win, and started at the front of the feature. The track was pretty narrow in the main, and we just maintained and ended up fourth.”

Saturday night, Matt and his Covington Racing team headed to Springfield for a combo Sooner/Warrior region event.

Drawing a high pill for his heat race, the locked down track was not to his liking as his started fifth and ran fourth, putting his Brodix/CG Martin/Factor 1 Racing machine on the front row of the B main.

Running second in the B, Covington made the transfer to the feature but he started in the 20th spot.

Wanting to try some things on their car, the team opted to make those changes on Saturday with the poor starting spot, and as it turns out, Covington was not a fan of what they did, and he finished in the 14th spot.

“A bad pill draw really dictated our night,” he said. “We got through the B, and since we were starting in the back, we decided to try some stuff we had been wanting to try, and I really didn’t like it, and we weren’t very good.”

Matt and his Covington Racing team would like to thank T&L Foundry, Triple X Chassis, Winters, Brodix, C.G. Martin Company, Factor 1 Racing, All-Star Performance, Outlaw Wings, Pro Shocks, DMI Components, Keizer Wheels, ButlerBuilt, Simpson Race Products, GME Steering, Wesmar Racing Engines, and Schoenfeld Headers for their support in 2013.
